ok, this i really don’t get… “hey, what should i do for a living? oh yeah, i’ll become an artist and put pink circles on pictures of buildings.”
Hello! I was happy to see someone had an opinion on that pic from my spot series. First of all, I would like to make it clear that I am far from what anybody would call an artist and nor do I plan to do art for a living. Second, I agree with you. It’s one of my poorest “works”, and I was amazed when I showed it to people and they actually liked it because it is, as you say, just pink circles on a picture of a building. It was part of a task where I had to put together colours and simple geometric shapes upon other photos or illustrations, to learn how different elements work in order to create something out of more than just one ”art”.
I guess my point with this is to say (or to defend myself as an ”artist”, haha) that sometimes you have to look away from the pink circles and pictures of buildings and try to look at it as a whole: does it work out? Do the colours match? Does it please your eye?
Now, if you do manage to look at a work of art as a whole maybe it becomes more than just circles and buildings, maybe, art would make more sense sometimes if you didn’t think of how it’s done and how much time it took to make it, but how it works out in the end, how it catches your eyes. Maybe this work of art did not make any sense to you, but does art need to make sense? Isn’t it quite meaningless when you think about it anyway? To me, art is all about pleasing the eye and the mind, you don’t have to see any deeper point behind it, you don’t have to analyse it, you just have to look at it, give it a chance, and, if you like it, you like it, if you don’t like it, you don’t like it. I’d say it’s as simple as that.
I see what you mean. And in a way i can agree with that. But at the same time, it is the same as with writing poetry - of course you can put many different words wrapped in emotions together and arrange them in separate line but to make it good poetry and as close to “perfection” as possible, you can’t forget about rhythm and theoretical issues. And the same goes with art in photos/paintings/etc., you can put together spontaneous colours but still you need to think about the technique/media/etc. used.
That is the other par of “deepness” that art should provide. Not only the emotional satisfaction.
And if i can give a suggestion about the pic itself - the brick wall at the right side kind of brakes the geometrical view of the whole thing (in my opinion).
P.S. And no need for defending yourself, cause no one is attacking you :) It isn’t that bad. I think I was in a crappy mood that day, haha.
